Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on all of the things and people in our lives we have to be thankful for, like our family, friends, health and well-being.

This Thanksgiving I hope you will also consider the things that you as judges, lawyers and legal professionals do for others so that they have things to be thankful for. Our profession is one that involves helping clients solve problems and secure justice. The work that you do for people not only eases their minds, but also may save them money, help them sleep at night and assist them in securing protections in their lives. Our prosecutors, public defenders, attorney generals, defense attorneys and judges help to ensure justice is done and that our Constitution and laws are followed. Our corporate counsel ensure that their businesses comply with laws and are legally protected. There are so many types of lawyers that it is impossible for me to mention all of the good things that each does; however, the legal profession accomplishes incredible things for our world.

The oath that we took upon being admitted to the practice of law reads in part:

“… I will employ for the purpose of maintaining the causes confided to me, such means only as are consistent with truth, and never seek to mislead the court or jury by any artifice or false statement of fact or law; I will maintain the confidence and preserve inviolate the secrets of my client at every peril to myself; I will abstain from offensive personality and advance no fact prejudicial to the honor or reputation of a party or witness, unless required by the justice of the cause with which I am charged; I will not encourage either the commencement or the continuance of any action or proceeding from any motive of passion or interest …”

Reading this part of the oath makes me think about all the other jobs that I could have, and only a couple of them demand such strength and integrity. This should make all of us very proud to be members of a profession that demands such high personal and professional standards.

So this Thanksgiving, remember that you are an integral part of why many people have reason to give thanks. You make the world a better place.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday.

All my best,

Carol Adinamis
